Grade 3 are now well into our first unit - Who We Are. The central idea is 'Self-awareness and knowledge of how we learn allows for personal and collective growth.'
We have been inquiring into our key concepts of perspective, change and connection. We have been thinking about how these join with our unit, as well as looking at our own perspective in life, how we are changing and what connections we make each day. The related concepts that connect to each of our key concepts are growth, relationships and beliefs.
Grade 3 have been exploring the first two lines of inquiry linked to our central idea.
1) Factors that effect how we learn
2) Learning styles
In our investigations, the students were exposed to De Bono's Six Thinking Hats, which focus on different types of thinkers. The students have been identifying which thinker type, or combination, best describes their approach to thinking and problem solving.
The boys and girls have also been using technology and language skills to create a electronic journal about their learning in our Unit of Inquiry, Who We Are. They are using an iPad app, Book Creator to create and maintain their digital journal. Their journal incorporates photographs, written text, audio files, drawings, and video for the students to collect, collate and reflect on their learning. It will be a large portion of their portfolio of learning, and will be a centerpiece of the discussions at the upcoming student-parent-teacher conferences (September 23rd).
In math the students have been using a daily math program called Mental Maths, which consolidates their daily number knowledge and general maths skills. The students collate, organize and record their learning and scores on a table. In addition, they meet twice weekly in small groups to reinforce their skills and knowledge. Finally, we have our math Olympics on Tuesdays, which focus on developing skills by playing math games.

In ELL class we have been practicing how to greet each other and how to respond, as well as learning the classroom vocabulary in order to enhance oral language development.
Dear parents, in order to assist our learners further, we encourage you to talk about the current unit with your children (each week there is a discussion topic as part of the home learning) and to have some discussions in your home language. This can make it easier for them to make connections to what they learn in class.
Grade 3 have been having lots of fun helping our buddy classes in Kindergarten on their new unit. We have helped them with ideas of how to solve problems and then became an audience for their fabulous performances showing how we can all get along together if we use the correct strategies.
Next Friday (16th September) there is a special workshop taking place at TIS just for parents. It is a workshop about developing a 'Growth Mindset'. The workshop will run between 8.30-9.30AM and will take place in the Multi Purpose Room (MPR) in the Secondary building. Grade 3 have been learning about growth mindsets in class and this would be a very useful workshop for you to attend if you have the time!
Grade 3 Explore Twitter
Some of the pupils have been talking about twitter this last week as they already have their own accounts. So, as a grade level we have taken action and set up a twitter account. We have two challenges. 1) Exploring ways that we can learn and inquire through twitter. 2) To see how long it takes us to get to 100 followers. If you have twitter and would like to follow our progress, we are tweeting from @grade3tis
Welcome to the G3 blog.
