'Who We Are' Assessments
Last week grade 3 completed their summative assessments for our 'Who We Are' unit. They presented their understanding of the central idea using the app 'Explain Everything'. Students presented confidently and showed their understanding for how they learn, factors that effect their learning and how working in a team can accomplish common goals.
This was an excellent unit to start the year with as it really encouraged students to think about their own learning and what new strategies they can use / try throughout the year to move their learning forwards!
New Unit - 'How We Organise Ourselves' Provocations
Our new unit has begun this week. Over the next six weeks children will be exploring using the transdisciplinary theme 'How We Organise Ourselves'. The central idea to the unit is 'An understanding of time impacts how we organise and manage our lives.'
For the first week we have been creating interesting provocations about time to stimulate children's views about how they feel time effects their lives. Grade 3 classes have banned all clocks and watches for the week. Also, both classes have created new irregular calendars for the students to try and follow. The provocation stage at the start of the unit is a very valuable tool to assess children's views, understanding and feelings about a topic area before proceeding to new learning.
More information about this very exciting new unit will be sent out after the October holiday!
Maths - Measurement
Our mathematic focus for this unit is measurement. We have been thinking about what measurement is, why we measure and how we measure. We have been looking at standard and non-standard measurements so far. We have also been making estimates and measuring many items from around our school. Please find some photos of our measuring activities below.
How We Organise Ourselves - Holiday Learning - PADLET
As our new 'How We Organise Ourselves' unit will take place either side of the October holiday, we thought it would be a great idea to try and connect our unit to the holiday.
We will be using a website called padlet.com - this is a great tool that allows for the whole grade level to use the same page to record their ideas, photos and videos about a topic. All you need to do is double click on a free part of the page and then follow the simple instructions to upload your words or media to the page.
We are looking at different ways in which the children organise themselves over the holiday period. For example, perhaps packing their own bags, organising their own clothes or some other activity where they have to prepare something. Children can either upload this in media (photo or Video) using an ipad / smart phone or they can just write what they did on the padlet page. They will probably require your help to upload their work to the page.

Growth Mindset for the Week
Hard work, persistance and dedication are so important to achieving a growth mindset and success!
Have a wonderful and relaxing holiday. We look forward to seeing the children on Monday the 17th October and hearing all about their organisational skills and adventures!
